Position Vacant thoughtful Software Developer for UMPC

Hi Guys,

Ive been chatting to a Software Developer friend of mine this evening (Tablet Specialist, and no not Dr. Neil) about developing for UMPC. He shot me this email which I thought Id share with you all. I dont know about you, but I believe Software Developers will lead the way in early adoption of these devices; after all its their apps that will give meaning to something that is somewhat inanimate at this point in time.

FYI here is what he wrote:

Hi Hugo,

Ive been continuing to research the question of whether UMPCs support pressure and it looks like they dont. "Resistive" applies to the TFT screen technology rather than the digitiser.

To prove this, I found the following on a UMPC developer article today:

"Another related factor to keep in mind is that the pens for UMPCs are simple pointing devices rather than electromagnetic devices. This means that applications do not receive as much information about pen interactions as they do on a Tablet PC with an electromagnetic digitizer. Make sure that your applications destined for UMPC devices do not rely on the extra information, such as in-air packets or digitizer pressure, in order to function correctly."

Hope this helps...

Remember this, if software developers dont write software that takes into account all the little idiosyncrasies of UMPC then well soon feel a backlash of hate from the UMPC buying public. The sad thing is that most of this "buying public" wont even provide intelligible feedback...youll only ever hear things like "this sucks!"

If youre thinking of developing for UMPC then you must be prepared to think about the reason for your app, and the purpose it fills. If UMPC is going to have any success at all then focus on UMPC as the Lion and you (the developer) are the Tamer. Master the beast so that we, the buying public, may all enjoy the spectacle! When planning and coding for your App, be the buyer not the vendor - see the UMPC as we will see it; a device that needs to fill a purpose, its your turn to shine.

  • Are you developing for UMPC?
  • Is there anything the community out there can do to support you?
  • Are you using Microsofts UMPC Display Emulator?
  • Did you know that Resistive touch and Capacitive Touch are not the same thing?

Capacitive vs. Resistive touchscreens
(from my understanding UMPC will mostly be resistive)

Capacitive: A capacitive touch screen panel is coated with a material that stores electrical charges. When the panel is touched, a small amount of charge is drawn to the point of contact. Circuits located at each corner of the panel measure the charge and send the information to the controller for processing. Capacitive touch screen panels must be touched with a finger unlike resistive and surface wave panels that can use fingers and stylus. Capacitive touch screens are not affected by outside elements and have high clarity.

Resistive: A resistive touch screen panel is coated with a thin metallic electrically conductive and resistive layer that causes a change in the electrical current which is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing. Resistive touch screen panels are generally more affordable but offer only 75% clarity and the layer can be damaged by sharp objects. Resistive touch screen panels are not affected by outside elements such as dust or water.

Cloud Apps that Made News in 2010

Cloud computing isn’t new by any means, but in 2010 it took off in a way that a lot of us have been waiting for a good long time, largely because of the massive surge in popularity of tablet PCs and smartphones. In the past, cloud computing was a convenience factor for people who used multiple PCs or who collaborated with their fellow workers extensively.

Now, however, cloud apps are essentially required if you want to get any real work done on your mobile device. With flash storage of between 16 and 64 GB, tablets are severely limited in what they can hold. To top it off, if you’re working on anything remotely confidential, a lost device could be disastrous if you store files locally. So, cloud apps have suddenly become the norm and companies are getting very large very fast as a result.

Dropbox

Dropbox has been around for a couple years now and in that time it has grown from a relatively small service that provides on the fly cloud storage of key files and easy sharing with users of your choice to the defacto cloud tool for anyone on a tablet PC running Android or iOS. Some technology writers have joked that Google or Apple should just buy Dropbox as it is as necessary as any of the built in apps on either operating system.

The real value of Dropbox is just starting to develop too. Many apps for both Android and iOS have developed ways to share files directly through Dropbox. You can even set automated folders on your hard drive at home that will process, share, or upload files that you create on a tablet, effectively streamlining tasks you cannot complete when on the road. And this is all with Dropbox just now reaching 1.0 status. It will be interesting to see what these folks come up with in 2011.

Evernote

I could have chosen any number of note taking applications, and I personally use One Note on my Windows tablet because it is more efficient in handling handwritten notes and Microsoft’s attempt at cloud computing has, thus far, gone very well for me.

However, Evernote is the clear winner in 2010 in terms of raw user stats and saturation. Most of that is due to their desire to provide a stable platform on every possible operating system. Evernote can be used on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, and just recently enjoyed an update to 4.0 on desktops, finally speeding it up enough to stop chewing up memory. And while its support for handwriting on a tablet is still lagging, many hand writing apps integrate with the Evernote or Dropbox apps to quickly store notes on the cloud.

There are of course dozens of cloud computing apps that have been important in the last year. Google continued to develop its arsenal of tools with Google Documents, both on Android and non-Google systems. Microsoft’s Live Office was a success in many ways as well. But, as is often the case, the real test of saturation comes in consumer apps, and both Dropbox and Evernote registered massive growth in the last year, thanks largely to cloud hungry consumers.

Warner points to real life TabletKiosk UMPC

Watch it on YouTube.com

Last week I was so desperate to try UMPC device that I used Microsofts UMPC Display Emulator to replicate the device on a regular touch Tablet. This time Warner Crocker points to a video of a 12 yr old girl using a real life TabletKiosk UMPC - very cool!

The girl is Lora Heineys niece, and the UMPC is soon to be available in Australia! Enjoy the video; a great demonstration of just how intuitive a touch tablet can seem.

My ACER Ferrari 1000 Tablet

So prior to Christmas it seemed like I’d done something right, to someone, somewhere. Not only did I receive a baby daughter in November but shortly after, and not as planned, came Mr. FedEX with a rather large box from ACER/Microsoft and AMD. What was it you ask? Only an Acer Ferrari 1000 Notebook with Windows Vista Ultimate pre-installed and Office 2007 Ultimate too.

I know there was a big uproar about the entire giveaway, and a great deal of fanfare due to the “morality” of the entire event, and in case you didn’t follow it read Mitch Denny, Craig Pringle or Frank Arrigo. All I can say however is that being on the receiving end was rather nice – if it weren’t for the fact that I’m a Tablet Guy and the Ferrari is a “just” a notebook.

Not to sound ungrateful but I must admit, to the horror of many geeks around the globe, that the box sat untouched for much of the festive season. When I finally got around to opening the box I was disappointed I hadn’t cracked her open earlier; I fell in love with Windows Vista and was overwhelmed with all the new Office features.

So there I was with an AMD Dual Core beast with all the bells-and-whistles staring back at me, and yet there was no pen. First thing I did was connect to the internet, obviously, and looked for the latest Windows Updates, of which there were none. Then I quickly modified my Sidebar via the Gadget Gallery, and then I stared…I stared at the closed lid of my little box. What was staring back at me you might ask; only the most beautifully molded piece of Carbon Fibre (replica I think) staring right back at me, and at the heart of the stare was the shiny-Red Ferrari emblem, embossed as only the precious horse should be.

I believe there are only three types of men in the world: those that like Porsches, those that like Ferraris, and everyone else. I for one have always been a Porsche man, and if you ever sat in a Porsche Cayenne you’d know what I mean; and yet when this little Black Stallion pranced on his little yellow shield of honor all I could think was thank you Microsoft, thank you.

Many journalists battled with the morality of handing bloggers a FREE top of the range notebook. They saw it as a bribe and even worse as a form of blackmail. I think Mitch Denny put it best when he said we were already converted, we’ve only been blogging about the merits of Microsoft forever…come on! You only have to read my blog for 6 seconds to know that I am an unpaid evangelist, part of the VEP (Volunteer Evangelistic Program…LOL), who is a passionate advocate for all things MS, although my primary expertise is Tablet PC.

The dilemma lies herein; do we keep the notebook, give it back to Microsoft or give it away. When I received an email today from Frank Arrigo I couldn’t help but feel a little nudged! Perhaps they did have expectations of the giveaway…of course…and perhaps, rightly so, Frank was wondering why I hadn’t blogged about the event given that my blog has quite a “nice” global following. So tonight I’ve blogged about it, and even posted a simple video. You may remember Wacom gave me a Vista enabled Tablet board recently which cleverly turns any notebook, or desktop, into a Tablet PC. So what else was there left for me to do but Ink Enable my Ferrari; and that’s exactly what I did. The following is a little video showing exactly that. I am happy to blog about any of the Ferrari features you like, and even comment on Vista. This is your space so let me know how I can benefit you from this giveaway.

And for those of you interested my plan is NOT to keep it…that leaves two choices, I believe. ;-)

Windows Vista launch rocked!

SO yesterday I attended the Vista launch and boy was it fun. There was all the regular fanfare but lots more than I expected. There was music, videos, music, videos, and more music and videos…if that seems rhetorical that’s because it is. The entire event was hijacked by the need to kill iPod the fact that most people now think of their PC as the hub of the multimedia experience. Not only were the words “streaming” and “downloading” made synonymous with today’s computing age but new words like “interactive” and “LIVE” had now become even more prevalent with the introduction of Vista…so we are made to believe!

I had fun. Surrounded by journalists I was able to get a feel for just how boring life is without a Tablet PC…poor bastards. Not only were they dropping pens and scribbling noisily on paper, but at the same time they were expecting to go home and read their shorthand sometime in the future. All I did was pull out my Samsung Q1 and record the experience on OneNote using my inbuilt mic array and OneNotes ability to record audio clippings…I didn’t even need a pen. I must admit that when one of the PowerPoint slides clicked over and displayed a Samsung Q1 Ultra-Mobile PC in the heart of its message I couldnt help but feel at home.

Overall there were three major announcements as follows (four really):

  1. New online music service from Sanity – The first integrated online music subscription service in Australia was announced by Sanity and Microsoft Australia. The new Sanity service will give Australian Windows Vista customers access to more than 1 million tracks to download and will offer both subscription and purchase options when it goes live in April 2007. It makes digital music both easy and legal for mainstream consumers.
  2. BigPond Movies – Microsoft Australia and Telstra BigPond today announced the integration of BigPond Movies content into Windows Vista Media Center. BigPond Movies is the first movie and video download service to be integrated with Windows Vista in Australia and is now available. For the first time consumers can download on their PC in the study then watch on their TV using Xbox 360 as a network extender.
  3. Kodak Online Print Wizard - Microsoft Australia and Kodak announced the integration of the Print@Kodak online printing wizard into the new Windows Vista Photo Gallery so people can send their photos to be printed directly from their Windows Vista computers and have them mailed back or pick them up from their nearest Kodak shop.
  4. New Solitaire!

I think one the most awkward highlights of the event was when a Microsoft Staff member turned to the big screen, where he had successfully depicted the roadmap for the new online music service from Sanity, and with one push of a button opened some curtains and presented us with the biggest eyeful of LIVE ROCK MUSIC breathing down our necks…here’s what I saw three seats away:

As I left I was fare welled by several tray-yielding wait staff with the friendliest looking chicken skews and quiche Loraine. I grabbed and scoffed, signed for my press bag and headed back on the fairy to Manly beach! Life is good…

Battery Life and the Future of the Tablet PC

Despite all the new tablets rushing to the market these days, to me there remain only a handful of features that truly are “must-have”. One of those is a decent battery life.

Battery life in particular is a big point of contention for any new product on the market because it can define the usefulness of that device. When Apple released the iPad earlier this year, it was no surprise that it touted nearly 10 hours of battery life under heavy use. Apple has long been focused on making sure their gadgets last longer for their users (to the detriment of functionality in many cases).

Yet, while many people like to compare the world of tablet PCs to Apple, keep in mind that Apple has long been highly controlling of their devices. If a battery fails in an iPad or iPhone, you cant swap it out for a new one – you must send it to Apple and wait for a replacement.

This is one of the harsh truths about tablet computing – for the device to be small and light enough to be truly functional outside of the office it often has a sealed compartment, making expansion with a new battery nearly impossible.

Some devices have gone against the grain of compartmentalizing, allowing third parties to release larger batteries to power them longer. The Dell Streak, for example, never had the greatest battery life, yet because the batteries can be swapped with relative ease, Mugen Power is able to offer 1800mAh and 4800mAh options as replacements. But, for many new devices, it’s just not a viable option.

As the “tablet wars” heat up, I think its important to note just how vital the battery issue is going to become. Most of this will lie in the development of battery technology. Right now, it feels like we’re approaching a brick wall – one where battery power can only be improved with larger, heavier batteries.

That’s not to say there hasn’t been much talk of fuel powered batteries or solar power use in  consumer devices, but it hasn’t progressed nearly far enough to make up for the advancement of other technologies.

It worries me that despite superior technical abilities and enterprise focus, a device without superior battery power might suffer on the market. The point of a tablet PC is mobility – and yet to get that mobility, devices like the iPad are being hobbled severely for their users. The iPad specifically cuts out external ports, limits OS features and only allows single task processing because anything more would severely cut down on that magic battery life number. Other devices want to offer more, and as a result, they suffer.

Dont get me wrong – I’m hoping that in a few years, this argument won’t matter as much – the same way that hard disk storage and camera megapixels eventually grew so powerful consumers could look to other features. But, the technology has a ways to go yet. The hunt is on for a better battery – one that can transform mobile computing into a powerful, long term replacement for the plugged in desktop. Here’s hoping it’s soon.

If you’re interested in this topic, which has been of great interest to me for many years, I’m working on a Report that will outline some practical tips on battery life optimisation. I should also have some documents finished soon that will outline what you can truly expect from a tablet PC in terms of battery life. I’m hoping to share these with everyone soon!

On the Road but this time with an R400

This may sound like a post someone else on the team has written - not Hugo! But yes, I can confirm that I will be hitting the road on an extended vacation (to Europe!) and my primary machine is going to be the Toshiba R400! While I deliberated over my choice extensively eventually it came down to a couple of criteria:

  • Screen size,
  • Battery life,
  • Processing Power ,
  • And Screen Brightness,

I must admit that I fell in love with the look of the R400 upon its first release; having said that I fell in love with the OQO model 02 also. The OQO has been my best friend and companion for quite some time now but when it came time to deciding how I was going to be mobile while away I had to think of my eyes and my mind. My eyes could not tolerate the 5" screen as a primary device for such an extended period (two months) while on the other side of the equation is my mind! I am a highly visual person and the screen brightness and resolution of the Toshiba R400 is absolutely irresistible.

I will post a video soon of my new R4OO but in keeping with my 2GB theme several weeks back you will be happy to know that the first operation I performed on R400 is a RAM upgrade! It proudly now sports 3GBs of RAM. The other interesting thing I found out was that there is actually a SIM card slot in my device! It is hidden under the keyboard, and right under that there is an empty PCI-express card slot! I will be doing all I can to turn it into a HSDPA animal! I will keep you posted!

Audi take Ultra Mobile PC to a new level

Photos courtesy of: The Wolf

A couple of days ago I put up a rather cryptic post regarding 10 girls, one car and the Samsung Q1. So without further delay, but with some constraints still upon me, I would like to shed some more light.

Recently I was contacted by Audi Australia by a rather freshly-migrated sounding German man. His name was Wolf [no surprise there] and his desire was to automate the manner in which Audi records and interacts with leads (names and numbers) from the Motorshow floor. The upcoming Motorshow was to be held in Melbourne, and in a very German like manner Wolf had only given me a matter of days to help him address his problems…all of them.

So after several emails, a couple of meetings and a dinner, Wolf and I became intimately acquainted with Audi’s intentions. For one, they needed to digitize a somewhat prehistoric data entry strategy, and secondly they wanted to utilize the latest technologies, both hard and soft. So I call in the big guns, Samsung and Dr. Neil.

When faced with recommending a product to them I had to consider three important criteria, i.e. resistive touch qualities, battery life and heat. The touch was easy, and if you’ve watched my video on 5 UMPC you’ll know why I chose the Samsung Q1. The second concern, battery life, was not so easy but still addressable via the Samsung Q1; although, I had proposed the Q1B but had that quickly brought back down to earth by Samsung Australia. “It’s not available!’ they rudely proclaimed. The third issue was heat and that too was an obvious decision. (Watch the video).

So the hardware was ticked off but what about the software. One of the prerequisites was that we utilize their German hosted corporate website, and the other was that we give them the ability to input using nothing but the finger. Sounds easy right! Guess again. The TIP (Tablet Input Panel) was too small and other keyboards too big - and full of features not needed. So what did I do? I called upon the best, i.e. Dr. Neil Roodyn and Richard “Tricky” Basset in the United Kingdom. The rest…if you allow me, is history. The application is developed using the latest Microsoft technologies and agile development practices like Microsoft Expression Blend toolkit which produces XAML, a markup language used by the new Windows Presentation Foundation found in Microsoft .NET 3.0.

Tonight all I can do is post some images and allude once more to the entire solution. It’s 11pm here and I need to be on a plane in 6 hours (including sleep) bound for Melbourne. I will video, take photos and describe the entire feat after tomorrows Official release. Until then sleep well…UMPC is a success!

PS. Ther is a counter at the Audi showcase with a massive counter on it...counting down! I wonder what that is all about!

Hugo Ortega and Nicholas White

In keeping with vlogging tradition today I sat with Nicholas White from Microsoft USA. He and I have shared many conversations during the Vista Labs in Beijing and this short video is no different. Nicks role is to support all non traditional media (a man after my own heart) and create nurturing environments that promote growth. One method Nick uses is his blog, The Windows Vista Blog, in which he publishes resources found within the walls of the Microsoft Redmond campus. The other method is through featured communities in The Hive (www.thehive.net).

I mentioned Nick in a post yesterday quite heavily yesterday but all I want to say is this, if you get a chance to spend time with Nick it is well worth it. He is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and seems to articulate subjects with the elegance someone much older than he. I appreciate his enthusiasm and the level of commitment he brings to his role…well done mate.

Here’s a short interview I conducted with him in China today, and yes, I also managed to bring UMPC and Tablet into the conversation!

Korea iPad and me

Coffee and gadgets with UMID: F1 and M1
(more photos on my FaceBook)

Travelling back from Seoul, Korea I couldn’t help but feel good about my experience. The food was better than what I’d experienced in Tokyo (although I blame that on the briefness of my trip to Tokyo), the people and buildings more interesting than Beijing and the gadgets very innovative. I met with UMID and VIliv, and a few others and discussed what’s now and what’s new. As I sampled the foods and played with the gadgets I could see that the South Korean’s are definitely focused on long-term profitability and viability of their country. If you have not travelled through South Korea I could suggest it is a “must see” on your list. To me it’s as unique and interesting as Dubai, and that came as a surprise to me.

Coffee with Viliv: S10, HD5 and new N5 to play with!!!
(more photos on my FaceBook)

Two amazing products I played with were the yet to be released Viliv HD5 and the N5. Both are innovative and both take the Ultra-Mobile PC platform up a notch! I have a video of the HD5 in action and will post that later. Both are tiny and based on Android form-factors which are designed to optimise battery life, and importantly, decrease price. Like I said the trip was great and well worth the effort. I will let you know more about the details as they come up and as I am able to share. Regrettably I sign more NDAs than I care to remember in my life so its a wonder I can even write a blog. However if you ask I can always find creative ways to answer! :-)

Technomart, (near Gangbyeon Station). Geek Heaven!

Regarding the iPad I have a few arriving on Monday morning (Aussie time) and will post some thoughts. I got sent some to review and Ill certainly give them a trashing. The first thing Ill do is sit down on my favourite couch and have some fun browsing YouTube (oh wait, no flash support), then Ill jump on Skype and have a video call from my backyard, that will be cool! (oh, theres no camera). At least I can go onto Apples stores and pay more money for apps I dont need! (Oh, theres no regional support for Australia). CANT WAIT!!!

OnTheRun with Tablet PCs 29 is out!

Its always fun to sit down and have a listen to the enigmatic James Kendrick, and his mate Marc Orchant, rant and rave about the latest Tablet Talk. If you havent heard one of these before now may be a good time as they do a UMPC/UPPC wrap up. Interestingly I get a mention in there (cheers boys!), and I really like the Samsung Q1 SSD machine (he liked it so much he bought the device - wow).

On Show #29 we talk about a couple of new Tablet PCs that have leaked out, James new Samsung Q1 SSD, and were both excited about the new ink guides in Outlook 2007 Beta 2 TR1. You might also find a tip or two about using Outlook and OneNote with your Tablet PC.

Me being mobile at the Vancouver Olympic Games 2010

When the opportunity came up to come to the Vancouver Olympic Games I really could not resist. As you know I started this morning, and although its been a monster day, it has been worth it. It commenced with a 4:35AM wake up call at my hotel room in Los Angeles; from there I raced to the airport and caught an Alaskan Airlines flight to Seattle (where I will be spending the week with Microsoft). Avis had a car waiting for me and I headed for the Canadian border!

Once I was in Canada the excitement began! From the crowds on the streets to the people with flags and the multitude of banners and advertisements lining the streets, the Olympic spirit was alive. The first event I went to was the Snowboarding only to find out I was too late for most the events. A little upset Id missed most the events I had caught the "Olympic bug" and decided to try my luck at another event...the Womans Hockey! So several hundred dollars later (didnt matter since Id laboured this far) I was in a cab and headed to another event!

Cypress Mountain: Mens Snowboard Cross event

From North Vancouver back to the West side I had to head to UBC (University of British Columbia) Thunderbird Arena! This is where I am blogging from as the game is going on! It is the second QTR and the Swedes are up 4 goals to 2 against Slovakia. The atmosphere is rocking and I am sitting next to the Swede fans and they are very passionate!

Winter Olypics 2010: Womans Hockey SWE vs. SVK

Once again, it is fun to show what mobility truly means, and how powerful it is to be mobile and broadcasting from some fun places in the world! Three countries in three days (Australia, America & Canada)! Love it!!! Its 8pm here and when the game is over Ill be headed back to America, Seattle and finally to my hotel in Bellevue. I will sleep well tonight.

VLOGS to resume ASAP

*Update 2nd Feb 2007 11:46am* Im back baby!

Look what came in the post!
*Update 2nd Feb 2007 11:46am* Im back baby!

I don’t know about you guys but I’m suffering from VLOG withdrawal syndrome (VLOG.W.S). Since losing the camera in China I have done little by way of blogging or vlogging, so I guess this post is designed to let you know that I’m OK and that the camera…replacement…is on its way! The irony is that when I was shooting with John Garden from Scissor Sisters I actually forgot my famous remote control and I improvised (to the shock and horror of John) with a hand gesture.

If you missed it make sure you watch part three of this video and right at the end you will see the funniest thing ever. We both laughed a lot about this. Oh, the irony. The irony is that all I have left of the original camera is the original remote control, and nothing else. So now I sit and point the remote…at nothing! LOL.

Good news too, Jon Dee and I have decided to make a return. Due to a massive wave of demand both online and offline we have decided to shoot again, on Monday, and post the results. So stay tuned, Hugo Ortega and Jon Dee on the UberTablet Blog one more time…

Hope you’re having a great week.

PS. If youre in Australia and you switch on your television to Channel 10, on March 4th, then youre likely to catch Jon Dee on COOL AID: The National Carbon Test

Honeycomb Arrives What Happens Next

Today is the day – the first Honeycomb tablet officially hits the market today, arriving at Verizon stores and Best Buys across the United States. And on the 2nd we will finally hear from Apple about their new iteration of the iPad. The year of the tablet is officially underway and that means there will soon be more tablets than we know what to do with crowding shelf space at your local electronics store. What role will Android play in the new market and how will the platform develop in 2011? Right now we are still guessing, but there are quite a few possibilities.

Full Android Functionality

For those that wanted a full scale PC experience on a tablet computer, the early Android releases like the Galaxy Tab were a little disappointing. Samsung’s first foray into the tablet market was impressive, but it was pared down quite a bit due to the use of Android 2.2, an OS designed for mobile phones.

With Honeycomb finally here, we will likely start to see new apps and possibly even new tablets that can do exciting things. It will still be a bit of time though before the apps roll in as the final Honeycomb SDK was just released on Tuesday. But, with new tablets coming from the likes of LG and Toshiba, plus Motorola throwing quite a bit of marketing weight into their first slate, Android is getting a strong push in 2011.

The Enterprise

An area we should keep a close eye is the enterprise. Companies are clamoring right now to adopt and integrate tablet PCs into their technology plans. But, thus far only the iPad has made an impact in the enterprise community, mostly because there were so few competitors in 2010. Even though Apple claims 80% of Fortune 500 companies are exploring enterprise use of the iPad, I imagine many will take a closer look at Honeycomb tablets as a potential alternative in 2011.

The iPad is not built for enterprise use, and while Apple has produced a handful of features and is expanding support for enterprise on the platform, the open nature of Android is friendlier for IT departments that must contend with support tickets and content control on a mobile scale. Third party companies are already arriving with solutions for Android like push app installation, remote support and rebooting, remote content control, and lost or stolen device detection.

And while BlackBerry Playbook will surely be a factor in the enterprise discussion this year, until it is released, there is no way to know if it will be the device to fill the gaping hole in enterprise mobility or if Honeycomb can make headway in that market.

What Happens Next?

Everyone wants to know what happens next – will Apple slide in market share to Android as it did in the smart phone market? Or will Apple’s commanding lead be bolstered by the iPad 2, likely arriving sometime between April and June? It is impossible to know for sure, but one thing is for certain – the arrival of Honeycomb is going to have a big impact on the tablet market and we will all be watching very closely.
